President Mohammad Khatami casts his ballot at the former residence of the founder of the Islamic revolution Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran 18 February 2000. Khatami, whose supporters are dueling with conservatives for control of parliament, pleaded with voters 'to speed the way to a brighter future' as they flocked to the polls for the sixth general elections since the Islamic Republic was proclaimed in 1979.
